Downton Abbey Dinner – Tina’s Traditional Tea Room. Carmel, IN. January 2017. ****

Ok, it’s not an afternoon tea, but they served tea and it was fun!! Nick bought this for a suprise Christmas gift in 2016 and I was very happy with him finding this all on his own — and his willingness to join me on adventures that can be sometimes off the beaten path. The dinner was several courses and the tea — well, I’m not sure why they chose the maple flavored 1776 tea to serve with the meal; I wasn’t the biggest fan of it. And it’s wasn’t very Britishy?

Simply delightful – afternoon tea at the Hotel Eclat, Beijing, China. September 2016. ****

This hotel surprisingly offered afternoon tea each afternoon – included in our guest room stay! Nick and I visited the lounge for tea twice for tea. It was a simple affair, with fruits and a few pastries offered, but you could select your tea and the wonderful hotel staff prepared it for us. What a fabulous perk at one of finest hotels in the world!

JASNA – Jane Austen Festival – Louisville, KY. July 2016. *****

I will always love the afternoon tea at the Jane Austen Festival in Louisville…

Nick has been taking me here for my birthday for the past four years. How did I exist before we knew about this festival? I don’t know. It’s located at historic Locust Grove on the northeast side of Louisville and is a perfect setting for the shoppes of Meryton and fabulous workshops on Regency England loveliness. I somehow didn’t document the teas from 2014 & 2015. Such sadness.

JASNA – Maura’s Irish Tea & Emma Book Discussion. February 2016. *****

Maura is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America – Indy Region. Once a year, she hosts a fabulouso tea for members at her home and we have a great book discussion. This tea’s book was Emma, my fourth favorite novel by Austen. Maura’s savories and sweets are first class and the fact we can get more than a dozen folks comfortably in her living room is a feat in itself! I look forward to it each year — and I’m sad I had to miss 2019’s tea!!

Soho’s Secret Tea Room – London, England. April 2014. ****

Ok, this place was a bit of fun. Enter through the downstairs at the Coach & Horses and up the stairs to a kitschy-fun and over-the-top sweet afternoon tea! I loved the egg salad sandwiches and the scones were great too. The sweet tasties were huge and we had to take them home. It was soooooo sweet, I don’t remember eating the leftovers the next day. I think the sugar rush lasted a few days. But fun! 4 stars. $24.96 for one person.

Pettigrew Tea Rooms. Cardiff, Wales. April 2014. *****

My friend Diane and I had a take a break from the afternoon and cream teas on our England/Wales trip. This adorable tea room near a lovely park in Cardiff was just the ticket. Our Ploughman’s Plates were wonderfully delicious. There was freshly jarred mackerel pate, homemade slaw, a trio of Welsh cheeses, Welsh apple chutney, bread, beets and fresh tomatoes. I enjoyed the mint tea; it was wonderful! 5 stars. $24.96US for one person.

Sally Lunn’s Bun House (actually Tea Room) – Bath, England. April 2014. ***

I had high hopes for this place. This lovely “oldest house in town” in one of the loveliest places on earth was a great place to take a break from heavy sight-seeing. But my Lunn bun was a bit disappointing, as it was just a large piece of bread with some type of lemon curdish glaze. I also had a savory sandwich and a pot of tea…but the Lunn bun afterwards was just too much bread. Diane opted for the bread pudding. 3 stars. $21.63US for one person.

Sometimes the best places don’t exist anymore – Brighton’s Blackbird. March 2014. *****

The best tea room I’ve visited so far was in Brighton, England – The Blackbird Tea Rooms…but alas, it closed not long after my friends and I visited in 2014. One of my best friends, Diane and her daughter Kelsey and I visited this lovely tea room on our second day in England. I had a rose flavored tea and we shared the sandwiches, scones and desserts. I had my first Battenburg cake here! We couldn’t eat everything and we had our leftovers nicely boxed up and enjoyed them the next day on our train to Salisbury…one day, maybe this little treasure on 30 Ship Street in Brighton will re-open elsewhere and I can have my husband Nick experience one of the most perfect afternoon teas ever…  5 stars. $21.63US for one person.
